Growin' Our Own (Feature stories)The VoidBy: Elmore Stone This story could also be called "Sailing ... sailing ... over the bounding main." Now when I talk about sailing I am not talking about rag-baggers or little bitty go-fast boats or the Sunday sailor mixing martinis on his cabin cruiser. Nah, not even close. I'm talking about ships. Real big ships that carry tons of containerized cargo from port to port throughout the world. These same ships also carried other cargo, again from port to port. Ouija Board and the Black SpiritBy: Cured It was high times in the 60s with lots of Mexican weed and the young kids always trying to score bricks. Every brick of pressed buds that we were lucky enough to score came with a story about its travels and source in Mexico. We would peel the tape off the colored heavy paper and see all the pressed buds. It was exciting. We examined every black striped seed as we broke the brick apart and cleaned the buds for rolling. I swear on my grave that this Ouija board story is true. It's about the first and last time we played with a Ouija board, the occult, and learned our lesson when an evil black spirit from another dimension appeared. I'll explain why I know it's true. I was damned near emotionally retarded. I had two older brothers, much older. I was the only girl, and sickly. I was protected by not only my parents, but also by those older brothers ... to a point. Everyone conspired to make sure that big, bad ol' world didn't hurt poor little me. Yeesh! It's a wonder I'm not in therapy to this day. Folks who know me now don't believe it when I tell them how I used to be, though many will say I look 'frail'. How I despise that word! Don't call me that to my face lest I rip your lungs out through your nose and feed them to you! Click here for the full story. Plant from Mexico has U.S. drug officials on alertBy: Reid J. Epstein (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) The clerks at Knuckleheads Tobacco & Gifts, a Madison smoking accessories shop, aren't allowed to say words such as marijuana, weed or pot. Although some customers undoubtedly smoke marijuana and are drawn to the store's water pipes and rolling papers, any reference to illegal drugs could get the clerks into trouble with their boss or the police, who tend to keep a close eye on counterculture establishments.
