Dutch Experience

By: Nol van Schaik

Nol van Schaik Third raid on first UK coffeeshop, 7 arrested for cannabis possession!

Seven people were arrested for cannabis possession in Stockport, during raid on Dutch Experience coffeeshop.

Four hundred people in Brixton, London have been warned, not arrested for cannabis possession, under Lambeth experiment.

These two announcements do not seem to go together, in a democracy, with equal rights for its citizens.

Yet, this is the sad truth in the UK at the moment, the government's left hand takes a softer stance on cannabis use, by running the Lambeth experiment in Brixton, London; the government's right hand puts the squeeze on cannabis users in Stockport, Greater Manchester, by arresting people for possession of small quantities of cannabis.

On January 3, 2002, at 3.00 am, the Stockport police came in to the Dutch Experience to arrest a man who was not allowed back on the premises of the DE, after a previous arrest for possession in a previous raid on the place.

He was present in the DE, ignoring the magistrates order to stay away from the premises, so he was taken away and locked up.

The GMP came back a few hours later, with a warrant, and arrested about six other people in the DE for possession, one man was arrested for having the key to the premises, he did not possess cannabis at all.

The last six people arrested have all been released now, Roo, the first arrest of that day, was released on bail this morning.

The Dutch Experience was re-opened, again, after the police left the premises. As usual, the police have not been able to close the place for an entire day so far.

Colin Davies, the initiator of the Dutch Experience, is still being held on remand in Strangeways prison, since November 20, without being convicted for a crime.

This is in great contrast with the situation in Brixton, where the police do not arrest people for possessing and using cannabis under the so-called Lambeth experiment, which is considered successful. The experiment is extended for a period of two months, from January 1, 2002. This approach saves a lot of police effort and a lot of money for all the avoided court follow ups of cannabis arrests.

Why is this display of common sense only applied in London, especially after finding out it seems to be an improvement of the old fashioned arrest-and-prosecute mode, for the better of police and public.

Bearing this in mind, the ongoing arrests for cannabis possession around the Dutch Experience coffeeshop in Stockport look like the GMP have their own rules and priorities, they do not want to make it easy for all involved.

The Stockport Magistrate Court is 'doing' cannabis every day, knowing full well that every case on possession, if the defendant pleads not guilty, is going to cost society about GBP 10.000 - for prosecution. The result will probably be a GBP 50 - fine, all convictions will be done after April, when cannabis turns to Class C.

There must be a huge lack of communication between the various Chiefs of Police in the UK, in London they try to save effort and money by not arresting cannabis offenders anymore; the Greater Manchester Police Force does not seem to realize this all.

How long can this rape of equal rights and democracy go on in a country that used to be the ultimate democracy, an example to the world, at one time?

How long can a government keep justifying these differences in treatment of their citizens, knowing the majority of the citizens want cannabis possession and use decriminalized?

I can only hope the press can give this issue the greatest attention, we can not rely on justice and equal rights any longer.

The River

By: Kelly Prince

ImageThe Sumerians used it around 4,000 BC. Egyptian Pharaohs were entombed with it. Classical Greek physicians prescribed it to their patients. The Chinese have used it for thousands of years, and still do for that matter. British East India Company monopolized it - at the behest and protection of the British government. Thomas Jefferson cultivated it at his garden in Monticello. The seeds from its plants were sold at the gift-shop of Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants until 1991. Sir William Osler called it "God's Own Medicine." And my father transported it down the Yangtsze river, by the ton, during the late 1920's and early 30's.

I'm talking about Opium.

Yeah, dear old (long departed) dad was a master of a ship for the Yangtsze Rapid Steamship Company. He commanded one of twenty seven ships for the company. Shanghai to Chungking and return. A one way trip of some 800 miles on that tortuous river.

The trip up the river, to Chungking, the ships were normally hauling various commodities, flour, sugar, coal, etc. The trip down river, to Shanghai, was a different story altogether. Opium by the ton. On the down river runs, each ship had a compliment of Chinese soldiers acting as guards for the all important cargo. Further, if the shipment was important enough, the soldiers were commanded by a Chinese general.

Ship captains, of which dad was one, were paid quite well. $800.00 dollars per trip - in gold. That is in the log book as well. Lest I forget, in 1928, dad was a whopping 20 years old.

Just getting to Chungking to pick up a load of opium was a nightmare. You see, the Yangtsze river is not like the gently rolling Mississippi. Far from it. The Yangtsze is nothing more than a series of gorges several hundred feet high and rapids with currents flowing in all directions. During Monsoon season this dangerous situation was magnified many times over. It was not uncommon for the Yangtsze Rapid Steamship Company to lose 2 - 5 ships per year because of the rapids.

Then, there were the guilds which had to be placated. I'm talking the beggars guild, the robbers guild, the coolie guild and on and on, ad infinitum. Dealing with the guilds at the various ports on the river's bank was supposed to be handled by the company. Sometimes it was, sometimes it wasn't. Though in all honesty heading down river the guilds were not a problem. Just turn the Chinese soldiers loose on them. They would disappear, quite literally.

No trip would be complete without worrying about pirates. Not that they would attack every trip, but you had to be prepared just in case. Dad had a fast way of dealing with pirates. First was to grab the shotgun, one of which was always on the bridge, and fire a round or two into the wooden pirate boat. If the boat wasn't leaking before, it was now. Then, light a magnesium flare and toss it into the pirates' boat. Without fail, the pirates would try to put out the burning flare by using water. Heh, heh, heh. Magnesium burns hotter and spreads faster when sprayed with water. The pirates were then faced with two real bad alternatives: burn to death or drown. Either way, they were history.

One of the key questions, as it was during this time frame when the Chinese communists and Chinese nationalists were doing battle over who would rule China, was protection of the ship. As I already mentioned, Chiang Kai Shek had guards on the vessels when opium was the main cargo, but there was one other security device. When at anchor, on the river or in Shanghai, these ships were under the protection of the United States Navy.

Can you imagine that? Delivering, over the course of a year, hundreds of tons of opium, all under the protection of the United States Navy and General Chiang Kai Shek. And getting a damn good payday in gold to boot. Gawd, nowadays you can be sentenced to life in prison for what? A few ounces. Yet people still crave it. People still smoke it. It truly is God's own medicine.

Ok, so what do you do with a ship loaded (no pun intended) to the gills with opium and swinging from the hook at the Port of Shanghai? You transfer the cargo, of course. Need to get that product to pharmaceutical companies, distributors, wholesalers, dealers and finally to consumers. In other words, get the opium out of China and into major ports-of-call. For that open ocean freighters were needed. During the 20's and 30's, one of the major shipping companies was the Dollar Line. Owned and operated by one Stanley Dollar. Stanley was one very sharp businessman. He was also one of the biggest thieves to ever set foot on the planet. Although Shek ran a very close second. Dollar and Shek had numerous business dealings together, but they never trusted each other. No honesty among thieves.

Once the opium was transfered from the river craft to the freighters, the freighters would get underway to the the following ports-of-call: San Francisco, New York and Marseilles, France. Now I have no idea what the cost per ton of opium was back then, it's not in the logs. I would assume that it couldn't be too much as people, rich and poor, were buying and smoking it, at home or in an opium parlor.

Dad quit the Yangtsze Rapid Steamship Company in 1932. The risk was becoming a bit much. Not because of the opium, but because of the war going on in China. The Chinese communists were shooting ship handlers and sinking ships. The U.S. Navy was pulling back. Chiang Kai Shek was in the process of establishing a Chinese government in Taiwan. Without experienced ship handlers the company could not meet shipping schedules. Shek and his cronies couldn't and wouldn't guarantee the port would be safe. Lastly, the great depression had a tight grip on the U.S. shipping industry.

The funny thing is, because of the depression, there was an even greater demand for opium. As for the Yangtsze Rapid Steam Ship Company, I have no idea whatever happened to them. I do hope that the employees got out before Mao Tse Tung took over China. Stanley Dollar lost his shipping company. The Dollar lines were horribly in debt and, talk about a deal, in exchange for canceling out all debt the U.S. government took over the company in 1938. After World War II, the government sold the company (Dollar Lines) to the American Presidents Lines and split the money fifty - fifty with Stanley Dollar. Who says crime doesn't pay?

You can no longer sail the Yangtsze river from Shanghai to Chungking. The Chinese government has dammed it up. It's even harder to get your hands on good quality opium thanks to our prohibitionist society. But if you long for some excitement mixed with some danger, go ahead, smoke some good opium and dream about the river.

What a long ... strange trip its been.

0013 Communique from the American Front:

By: General Lee Doofy

General Lee Doofy's flagTimothy Leary, Jerry Garcia and Ken Kesey are dead. Their freedom of thought lives on.

The war on the Taliban and the al-Quaida terrorists is under control. The outcome should have never been in doubt. One need only look as far back as the native Americans to know that the the U.S.A. would prevail. Might makes right. The 9/11 attack by the Osama bin Laden terrorists was no less brutal than the massacre of women and children some two hundred years ago by American Indians, who were fighting to maintain the ideology of their culture.

What is worthy of comment is not the similarity of the situations. That should be obvious. What is remarkable is that this country is capable of spreading its doctrine throughout the world in such a short time span.

The Afghani women have taken off their burqas, the men have shaved. They have turned on their radios. They will soon learn a new type of subservience. They will learn to consume. To consume they must produce, however they will not be permitted to produce one of their main cash crops - opium poppies. The United States government will regard them as booboisie, to be enslaved and educated on the production and consumption of approved commodities.

The terrorists of 9/11 hate us for the change we bring. The flat out assault they see on their way of life. Capitalism disguised as democracy, while professing equality for all, knows no race, no caste, no gender and no creed other than its own.

The American currency has the words -IN GOD WE TRUST- printed on the back. Which god, the god of tender mercies or the god of legal tender? Do we pray to the Big Mac?

When our government looks back to home and begins to use its new and expanded powers, we as citizens will find ourselves embroiled in an effort by our government to further regulate the products of their 'consume' ideology. There will be little regard for our freedoms of due process. This will happen in all regards; pot laws, gun laws, sex laws and freedom of speech. It will apply to all areas where individuals question or contest the government's authority.

What does this have to do with SEX-DRUGS-ROCK&ROLL?

Everything. The words that the troops in Doofys' army used yesterday, and the day before and will use tomorrow and the next day, are and were predicated on past words and actions which were replete with sex-drugs and rock&roll. Those things - for better or worse - are a part of U. S. consumer goods.

Yesterday I was discussing the current status of the United States internal war on drugs, with an officer from the S.E. quadrant. I asked the colonel how he explained the pot leaf tattoo on his forearm to his children, ages twelve and fourteen.

"I tell them the truth."

"What a novel idea"

"I have always felt that the marijuana issue was one of civil liberty and personal freedom. I still feel that way."

The colonel risks his life style and his freedom to speak openly and honestly to his children. Our enemies in the government, for gains of finance and power, use their children and ours by hiding behind them and forwarding half truths and lies. This is a very dangerous enemy indeed.

What we see as acts of altruism they will represent as nihilism.

If the populace continues to follow them as sheople lined up for the fleecing, some of us, and certainly our children and grand children, will end up as mutton in the stew of the melting pot.

SEX - DRUGS - ROCK&ROLL is here, for the time being, so in the words of our president "Go out there and consume. Take your family to Disney World. Get on an airplane and fly..."

Or possibly purchase a Rob Zombie cd, toke up and get laid. Grow it if you need it. Smoke em if ya got em.

General Lee Doofy

........... waging a war with words ... lookin' for recruits ........
