Cream of the Crop Reviews

King of Nepal coverKing of Nepal

Author: Joseph R. Pietri

Exotic locales ... exotic women ... exotic drugs ... this book has all of those and more. Care for a conspiracy or two? How about some treachery, lies and bad faith? The busts, evil narcs, and even more evil government agents are icing on the cake.

The author, Joseph Pietri, wrote this book from his personal experiences in Nepal, Thailand, India, Laos, Pakistan and a few more prosaic places in North America. It reads like a description of a really good boxing match - he bobs, he weaves, he's given a low blow, he comes back with an uppercut, but he's never down for the count.

Early on in the book, he recounts his pleasant days in Nepal:

"Nepal was beautiful. Using my US$100 license to trade in hashish and ganga in the Kingdom of Nepal I would rent a helicopter and fly to Ra Ra Lake (the highest lake in Nepal) in the Humla Jumla district. There I would buy out the area's complete production of Spaghetti Finger Hash, fly it back to Kathmandu, declare it at Customs and pay the 35 rupees (US$3.50) per kilo tax. I would then load it in my car and drive home - all completely legal. Nepal was beautiful. Through the Chine Lama and his son Ganesh, I had connections all the way to the King, but the Home Minister, Mr. Shrestra, was especially sweet, as he extended my stay in Nepal and afforded me his protection."

Of course, it hasn't all been a bed of roses (or hash) for Mr. Pietri. A few short years later he was given up by those he thought to be friends and busted. After being extradited to the U.S. he was tried, convicted and sentenced to 5 years probation ... for drugs, of course. After serving his probation like the charming lad he was, it was back to business.

There is so much information in this book on smuggling, different types of hashish, the dirty dealings of the U. S. government vis-a-vis drug smuggling and dealing, that I could write an entire book describing this book.

Instead, I'm going to strongly recommend that you buy this book and read it yourself! It isn't a tome the size of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, so tuck it in your briefcase or under your arm for lunchtime. No, don't do that ... if you start reading it at lunch you won't get back to work that afternoon.
